GD Agarwal faced death for 'GANGA'

The well known activist GD Agarwal took his last breathe in AIIMS - Rishikesh on 11 th October 2018 after a long fast of nearly 4
months to 'SAVE GANGA'.

The 87-year-old Ganga activist was on a fast had a heart attack after 109 days of fast and was taken to AIIMS Rishikesh where he died at 1 PM after several treatments failed. The fast was started on June 22, 2018, when he demanded the government to ban the mining and hydropower projects in Ganga. He
also demanded a law to maintain the protection of river Ganga as well as its flow from Gangotri and Uttarkashi.

According to the reports, he was only consuming water and honey since last 109 days. He left taking water two days ago on 8th of this month when he came to knew all his demands were rejected. GD Agarwal was a well known Environmentalist and he was also a professor at the Indian Institute of
Technology in Kanpur. He was also a member- secretary of CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board).

In 2009, he also went on fast to protect river Bhagirathi which forced the government to stop the construction of dam on rive Bhagirathi. But this time GD Agarwal failed to death but can't protect Ganga.

The 'Save Ganga' activist said, "Neither the center nor the state government is serious about what happens to Ganga. They are behaving like dictators. We have sent several request letters to the Prime Minister and water resources ministry but nobody has bothered to reply. I have been on fast for past
109 days and now I have decided to take my tapasya forward and sacrifice my life for the Ganga river. My fast will finish after my death", in a press conference at Matri Sadan ashram on Monday.

The activist Prasahant Bhushan tweeted after the death of Late GD Agarwal, "GD Agarwal, our leading environmentalist who fasted 109 days to save the Ganga, was forcibly picked up by the Uttarakhand police and hospitalized yesterday. He passed away today after his pleas to save the Ganga fell on Modi's deaf years. RIP Dear Sir. This world is not for pure souls (SIC)".
