Developing India in field of natural energy resources

Ipseeta Das (Delhi) - After the United States, China and Russia; India is the most energy consuming country in the world. The increasing rate of population and economic development India is in the surge of rapid energy consumption as energy is the basic input for almost each and every economic activity which mandatory for a quality living. There is a huge difference in consumption of energy by developed and developing countries like 100 units of energy is used in America whereas India consumes only 2 units. It totally depends on the developmental structures or activities of each country.
India is an agricultural country where half of its population lives in villages and uses natural products like wood, organic waste, dung etc as their source of energy. But when it comes to Urban India full of industries, big buildings, malls, telecommunication, transportation etc uses of energy coming from coal, natural gas, nuclear power, wind, water oil etc is common.  In 2012, India demanded 918 billion unit of domestic power which is expected to be 1,640 billion units by 2020. Back then India was using 210 gigawatts which will turn into 390 gigawatts in future which is almost double. India is a mixture of poor and rich and this mixture led a huge difference in use of energy within the country itself. There are still many villages in India which don’t have electricity supply to their homes and it is still a great matter of concern although the Modi Government is working on it too.
Currently, India is highly depended on Coal and fossil fuel for creating energy. But the rapid growth of population is demanding more consumption of natural sources which means keeping the future in the stake.
India was the seventh large energy consumer in 2000, now within 18 years only it has become the fourth largest energy consumer with the fifth largest power generation portfolio in the entire world. At present, India is trying to meet its consumption demands with its supply demands for renewable energy system of the country.
Talking about each natural resource condition of India, here is the present scenario:
  • Geothermal
Formed from the original formation of the planet and radioactive decay of minerals Geothermal energy has 350 locations in India as claimed by Geological Survey of India. The estimated potential for creating geothermal energy in India is 10000 MW. Some of the places for geothermal provinces in India are Himalayas, Sohana, West Coast, Cambay etc.
  • Biomass and Biogas Energy
Formed from resources derived from the carbonaceous waste of human as well as natural activities and by-products like animal dung, agricultural wastage etc. India has a capacity of 17,500 MW biomass generations and the government of India is working on increasing the capacity by deploying different policies and executing strategies.
  • Wind Energy
India has resulted in a huge amount of wind energy productions by producing more wind-driven turbines in the last few years. At present, the total installed wind power capacity is 34.293 GW which is estimated to be 60 GW till 2022.
  • Solar Energy
Solar power energy generated from the sun is the fastest developing energy in the country. India had 2,650 MW which has converted into 23 GW in the last 4 years which is almost 8 times more comparatively.
  • Tidal Energy
This energy is generated from the periodic rise and fall of the water level of the sea which occurs due to seawater attracted by the moon. Last year India stated about the 7500 km long coastline with over 5 meters high tides which showed the potential of generating tidal power. Thus the country could produce 7000 MW of power in Khambhat Gujrat, 1200 MW in Kutch Gujarat and 100 MW in Gangetic delta Westbengal.

India has plenty of natural resources to generate potential energy to meet up its demands and the country’s government is playing a vital role to develop the resources for a long run.
